  • Inside Our Shrimp Farm

    Blue Heron’s indoor aquaculture is the most sustainable shrimp farming solution in New England. By using a clearwater RAS, we benefit from:

    Minimal Water Use: Our entire farm uses the same amount of water per day as an average household.

    Minimal Space: Indoor shrimp farming requires significantly less space than traditional outdoor ponds, which can harm critically important mangrove ecosystems.

    Minimal Waste: Our tanks produce less than 1% system discharge, which can be reused as liquid fertilizer or compost. 

  • Learn About Our RAS

    Our technology partner, Midland Co, pioneered a RAS that harnesses the superpowers of algae. This, combined with robust filtration, strips the water of waste — allowing shrimp to be sustainably farmed in the cleanest possible water with a near 100% water reuse rate.

  • The Process

    We start by adding specialized salt mixes to our tanks to make the perfect saltwater. Then we fine-tune the water to create the ideal indoor environment for raising Pacific White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). To learn more about our process, join us for a guided farm tour!

Born and raised in NH, we grew up with a love of seafood and an appreciation of where it comes from.

We’re always cooking together, experimenting with new dishes inspired by our New England roots. After a while, we noticed that most seafood is readily available — except for fresh shrimp.

Drawing from our shared experience in marine science — Stefan’s background in small-scale oyster farming and Becky’s in aquariums and animal husbandry — we set out to serve our community with locally grown shrimp for the very first time.

As partners in business and in life, we started Blue Heron Aquaculture as a sustainable way to provide New England with the freshest premium shrimp.
